Barre, Raymond

Barre, Raymond
   (1924-2007)
Prime Minister of France under president Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, from 1976 to 1981. Barre, who began his career as a professor of economics in Paris, worked in the finance ministry and in the European Commission in Brussels, before being chosen as Prime Minister by Giscard. At the time, as an economist rather than a politician, he was relatively unknown to the French public. He is the only person in recent French history to have reached a top government position without first rising through the ranks of a political party.
